Ted's Bridge World The Master Play

#6: Starting the Day with Style

*

You hunt for the table assigned for your first match in a Reno Regional Swiss Teams in 1992; already seated there is a pair of young men that you have not seen before.  The excitement commences on the very first board of the event.

The 2NT opening-bid is alerted and explained as "Schenken", indicating 5-5 or better in the minors with 8-10 hcp. Your partner couldn't help wincing a bit as you trotted out Old Black, for clearly he was not proud of his call.  In the era prior to bidding boxes, your right-hand opponent doubles the final bid most vigorously.

The opening lead is the 8, and east contributes the deuce.  Plan the play.
