Ted's Hiking World Penner Lake
Crooked Lakes Basin

September 18, 2025

This is the latest that I have done this trail; the modicum of fall color enhanced the views.

*

*
#1:Carr Lake

*
#2:Feely Lake, and Fall Creek Mountain

*

*
Corn Lily

*
#3:pond

* *

*

*
#4:lake

*
Turning north here

*
Pine Drops
*
Greene's Mountain Ash

Although it is long, it's not Long Lake; I misspoke:

*
#5:Island Lake

The real Long Lake is behind the far side of this one.

* *

*
Starting uphill from #6:pond

*
Approaching the destination

*
#9:Penner Lake

This lake is at the edge of the Great Basin.  The little hill behind it is part of the Great Basin Divide; on the other side and down about 600 feet are Culbertson Lake and the Lindsey Lakes, which waters flow to the ocean.

*

*
Red Mountain Heather
*
Meadowsweet

*
Dwarf Bilberry

This outing feels 'unfinished' without a climb up my beloved Peak-7264 behind the lake, because that's where the best views are; but it seems a bit too warm for that extra effort today.

*
Starting back

*
Westward view

*

*
#7:Crooked Lake, upper right; #8:Crooked lake, center left

*
Almost down to #6

*
Last of the hill
*
Back on the flat

*
#6

*

*

*
Alpine Aster

*
Whatever it is, it's important enough to tie up high

*
That's why they call it Island Lake

*
The trail up the Fall Creek Mountain starts here

*
Several erratics are just hanging up there

* *

#4, at the trail junction
